Isotonic Sterile Saline Solution
Use an isotonic sterile saline solution, make sure it is NOT an eye contact solution or a nasal spray solution.
No matter the brand you choose it’s important that the can contains no preservatives or additives.
Spray directly onto your piercing (front and back) 2 times a day for the entire time that your piercing is secreting fluid and becoming crusty.
When showering and washing your face; rinse your piercing
thoroughly (front and back) at the end of your routine to fully rinse out any shampoo, conditioner, or cleansers/soaps that may have gotten inside the piercing channel while washing.
Directly after a shower is the best time to remove any crust build-up or scabs that may have formed between cleaning. The water from rinsing in the shower has most likely washed away the majority of the crust and any left over can easily be wiped away with a damp paper towel.
Do not sleep with wet hair after a fresh ear piercing!
Too much moisture is a common way piercings get irritated
and form bumps. Let your hair dry completely
before bed for at least the first couple months.
You’ll want to make sure that your piercing is drying quickly after spraying with saline as well. Spraying too much can make your piercing too wet for too long. For areas with little access to air flow you can also gently dry the pierced area with a blow dryer on the COOL and low settings. Be sure to regularly change out the filter on your blow drier to reduce blown debris.
Do not pick at or remove crust or scabs throughout the day. Doing this not only introduces your piercing to the bacteria on your hands, but it also reopens the wound and prevents it from sealing itself as quickly as it could.
Once your piercing is no longer secreting and leaving crusty
buildup on your jewelry and skin, you can stop
the use of saline solution. This does NOT mean it's done healing!
Continue to rinse your piercings with plain water during a shower. Depending on the piercing, your body is likely to take at least 6 months to fully heal, and it’s common for some to take over a year to heal entirely. It's important to continue treating it gently!
It’s always a good idea to continue rinsing your piercings in the shower as a part of your regular hygiene routine to keep them looking fresh throughout the years.
